About Kate

Kate Ballou is a DC-based encaustic artist working through layers of opaque and translucent color to explore the passage of time, quality of light, and the challenges that come with releasing the need for control in our lives. Responding to the nature of encaustic wax, Kate graphically embraces the playful forms, both recognizable and abstract, that emerge from her paintings. This provides an opportunity for each viewer to create their own unique connection with the art based on the significance of their personal discoveries within the paintings.

A formally trained interior designer and artist, Kate began her fine art studies at Rhode Island School of Design where she focused on drawing, painting, and textile design. She received a BFA in Interior Design from Parsons School of Design. For years, Kate has painted as a supplement to her interior design practice, Hendrick Interiors, to further explore her love of color, texture, light, and space.
